Today was the second time in my whole life I didn't stop eating for hours! The first time was the day of one of my best friends' Moroccan wedding day (Hi Nadine)!
Today was very special in the sense that, with my friends, we felt like being tourists in our own country.
Today, we did a street food tour in Tunis Center!
The activity was initially scheduled in order to help an Egyptian friend of ours Kenzy, get to know better the Tunisian culinary culture after she brought a whole صنيّة of كشري (Koshari: one of the best foreign foods I have ever eaten on my entire life!) fo us last week.
The day started by meeting Wajdi Borji, originally from the island of Djerba (and other origins as well...). Wajdi is a very cool guy who can be too many people at the same time: a young psychologist, a talented actor, a food expert, a moviemaker, an active tourist guide, and a very famous star.
He is also a creative writer and can be inspired by many elements essentially nature.
The concept was to visit many places located in the center of the capital Tunis and at each stop, Wajdi was narrating historical facts, anecdotes, and amazing stories from different eras.
Many aspects of this street food tour with Wajdi grabbed my attention and made me feel the extremely special vibe of the experience.
One of them was the fact that everything we ate at all the stops was neither spicy nor very greasy as it might seem in the pictures.
The other aspect was that we learned every story behind every dish we ate: the origins of its name, why did our ancestors use to cook it the way it's cooked, and so on...
also, you don't get bored with Wajdi!
So here is briefly what we did during our 3-hour food tour. I won't state all the details because I highly recommend you go through it yourself.
Stop 1: Marché Central (originally called فندق الغلّة / Hotel of fruits in Arabic)
Stop 2: صحن ثوم (A plate of Garlic )
Stop 3: كفتاجي (A plate of fried vegetables: tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, eggs ...)
Stop 4: فريكاسي (a specific type of fried bread with mashed potatoes, tuna, and olives)
Stop 5: الخبزة البحريّة (aka pizza de chez Memmi)
Stop 6: Pâtisserie Naouri (Naouri pasteries)
